A highly anticipated auction in Los Angeles will showcase iconic film costumes, including John Travolta’s jacket from ‘Grease’ and Christopher Reeve’s Superman costume, benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
In March, a highly anticipated memorabilia auction in Los Angeles will feature an extensive collection of items from iconic films, including notable costumes from the classic film “Grease”. Among the highlights are the outfits worn by John Travolta and Dame Olivia Newton-John, with Travolta’s signature T-Birds gang jacket expected to attract bids between $100,000 and $200,000 (£79,022-£158,036). The jacket, associated with his character Danny Zuko, is a piece of cinematic history, representative of the film’s lasting impact since its release in 1978.
The auction, organized by Propstore, will also showcase Dame Olivia Newton-John’s patterned dress from the same film, which is estimated to sell for between $30,000 to $60,000 (£23,704 to £47,408). This dress features prominently in a memorable scene at the Frosty Palace, where her character Sandy Olsson dances and interacts with Zuko, providing context to their tumultuous relationship.
Other notable items include a Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve in the 1983 film “Superman III”. This particular costume, which portrays a darker version of the character, is estimated to fetch between $200,000 and $400,000 (£157,989 to £315,978). Reeve’s legacy was highlighted in a recent Bafta-winning documentary, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story”, which reflects on his life and career after his tragic accident.
The auction will also feature the robe worn by Sir Michael Gambon as Dumbledore in “Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince”, and boots used by Sir Charlie Chaplin in the 1940 satire “The Great Dictator”, with estimated values of $125,000 to $250,000 (£98,744 to £197,488). Additionally, pieces from other well-known films will be available, including a bomber jacket worn by Tom Cruise in “Top Gun”, a ghost trap from “Ghostbusters”, and a jacket donned by Angelina Jolie in “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life”.
Propstore’s Chief Operating Officer, Brandon Alinger, expressed that “this auction brings together an exceptional line-up of some of the most recognisable and well-loved props and costumes in Hollywood history.” He noted the connection that fans have with these items, stating that they resonate globally and evoke nostalgia associated with beloved films and characters.
Alongside these cinematic treasures, additional items such as a cigarette holder used by Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in “Django Unchained” will be part of the auction, which is notably supported by director Zack Snyder’s personal collection.
The three-day live auction is set to take place from March 26 to 28, with all proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
