Miley Cyrus launches her new single “End of the World” featuring a vibrant Eighties-inspired music video, signaling a shift toward optimism in her upcoming concept album Something Beautiful and an accompanying visual film.
Miley Cyrus unveiled her new single “End of the World” on Thursday, accompanied by a retro-styled performance video that channels nostalgia and a vibrant Eighties aesthetic. The pop star’s latest release highlights a shift from anxiety toward optimism, with the visuals and music reflecting a glamorous, starlet-inspired vibe.
The video, co-directed by Cyrus along with Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter, opens on a soundstage reminiscent of her notable 2024 Grammy performance. It alternates between scenes of Cyrus performing and more intimate shots of her reclining in front of a drum set, dressed in a striking emerald green minidress. The song’s lyrics further evoke a sense of seizing the moment, with Cyrus singing lines such as, “Let’s spend the dollars you’ve been savin’ on a Mercedes-Benz / And throw a party like McCartney with some help from my friends.” The repeated hook, “Let’s pretend it’s not the end of the world,” encapsulates the theme of embracing joy despite uncertainty.
This new single is part of Cyrus’s anticipated concept album, Something Beautiful, for which she has also released the title track and a spoken word piece titled “Prelude” earlier this week. Something Beautiful serves as the follow-up to her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation, which included her hit “Flowers” and resulted in her first Grammy recognition.
In addition to the album, Cyrus is preparing to release a feature film in June that will offer a “unique visual experience, fueled by fantasy” and featuring 13 original songs from the new album. The project is described as a “one-of-a-kind pop opera from the mind of Miley Cyrus.”
Reflecting on the creative process behind Something Beautiful, Cyrus previously shared her deep connection to the album, comparing it to Pink Floyd’s The Wall: “We really leaned in,” she said last year. “My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.”
The Rolling Stone is reporting on Miley Cyrus’s continued evolution as an artist through this multifaceted project that expands beyond music into visual storytelling.
