Mondi Group’s latest report reveals a significant shift in consumer behavior towards sustainable packaging and highlights the importance of eco-friendly practices in eCommerce.

Mondi Group, a prominent name in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, released its sixth annual eCommerce trend report titled “Sustainability and its impact on packaging and online shopping choices” on February 28, 2025. The comprehensive study reveals significant insights detailing changing consumer behaviors and attitudes towards eCommerce packaging.

Data was gathered from approximately 6,000 consumers across several European countries, including Czechia, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Türkiye, through an online survey conducted in October and November 2024. The research, co-authored with RetailX, sheds light on various trends that eCommerce brands should consider to better meet consumer expectations.

“What we see this year is that sustainability is no longer just a trend, it’s a business imperative,” said Armand Schoonbrood, Mondi Group eCommerce COO, emphasizing the growing demand from consumers for actionable sustainability efforts by retailers. He added, “Consumers are demanding tangible action from retailers to reduce their environmental impact.” Mondi aims to assist its partners in building trust and loyalty through innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.

The report highlights an increase in the frequency of online shopping, with 71% of consumers indicating they shop online monthly, a notable rise from 56% the previous year. Despite changes in shopping habits, consumer spending appears stable, as one in four respondents reported spending between €120 and €290 each month.

Protection and sustainability are critical considerations for consumers when it comes to packaging. The study found that 95% of respondents prioritize protective packaging, while 80% express a preference for environmentally conscious or recyclable materials. Unpacking experiences also play a role in influencing purchase decisions; 59% of consumers stated that packaging impacts their decision to buy again, with 71% of Gen Z consumers emphasizing the importance of aesthetics and recyclability.

Furthermore, the report delves into the issue of transparency regarding eco-friendly claims. Notably, only 50% of consumers trust the environmental assertions made by online brands. Conversely, the findings indicate that the use of sustainable packaging has a positive effect on brand perception, with 90% of participants favoring brands that utilize recyclable and appropriately sized eCommerce packaging.

The complete 2025 Mondi Group eCommerce trend report, which provides an extensive analysis of consumer behavior, packaging innovations, and sustainability expectations, is accessible in English through the Mondi website.
