The latest report from Mondi Group reveals evolving consumer behaviors, emphasizing the critical role of sustainable packaging in online shopping.

Mondi Group, a prominent player in the sustainable packaging and paper sector, has released its sixth annual eCommerce trend report entitled “Sustainability and its impact on packaging and online shopping choices.” This report, compiled in late 2024, surveyed approximately 6,000 consumers from a range of countries, including Czechia, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Türkiye, which provided key insights into the shifting behaviors and expectations of online shoppers.

A significant finding from the report reveals a marked increase in online shopping frequency, with 71% of respondents reporting that they make online purchases at least once a month. This figure reflects a substantial rise from 56% in the previous year, highlighting the need for eCommerce brands to adapt to these evolving consumer habits.

Sustainability has emerged as a pivotal factor affecting consumer purchasing decisions. Notably, 90% of those surveyed expressed a preference for brands that use recyclable and appropriately sized eCommerce packaging. Additionally, 80% of respondents emphasized the importance of using environmentally friendly or recyclable materials. The protection of products during transit is also a top priority, with 95% indicating they value packaging solutions that ensure product safety. The unboxing experience plays a significant role in future purchasing decisions; 59% of consumers stated that the quality of the packaging influences their likelihood of making repeat purchases, particularly among Gen Z consumers, who show a strong preference for both aesthetics and recyclability in packaging.

While there is an increased demand for sustainable packaging, there remains a notable skepticism among consumers regarding sustainability claims. Only 50% of respondents expressed trust in the environmental initiatives claimed by brands, highlighting the need for transparency and authenticity in these efforts. To foster consumer trust, companies are encouraged to provide clear and verifiable information concerning their sustainability initiatives.

The insights from the report carry significant implications for businesses in the packaging sector. To align with consumer expectations, companies are urged to adopt sustainable, protective, and visually appealing packaging solutions. Such alignment not only boosts brand loyalty but also enhances competitiveness within the industry.

Armand Schoonbrood, the eCommerce COO of Mondi Group, articulated the necessity of prioritizing sustainability in business practices, stating, “This year’s findings confirm that sustainability is no longer just a trend; it’s a business imperative.” Additionally, RetailX Chief Editor Ian Jindal echoed this sentiment, remarking that “sustainable eCommerce packaging has become more than a preference – it’s now a consumer expectation.”

The comprehensive Mondi Group eCommerce trend report for 2025 serves as an extensive resource for eCommerce brands, shedding light on consumer behavior, packaging innovations, and expectations regarding sustainability, as businesses navigate the complexities of the modern market.
