The Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris showcases a retrospective of the friendship and creative legacies of two iconic designers, running from March 3rd to June 29th, 2025.

A new exhibition at the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris showcases the intertwined legacies of fashion visionaries Azzedine Alaïa and Thierry Mugler. Running from March 3rd to June 29th, 2025, this retrospective celebrates the friendship and creative affinities between the two iconic designers and offers insight into their personal and professional bonds.

The collaboration between Azzedine Alaïa and Thierry Mugler began in 1979 when Mugler invited Alaïa to design tuxedos for his autumn-winter 1979-80 collection. This invitation marked the starting point of a decade-long friendship that significantly influenced the fashion industry. The exhibition features over forty pieces from Mugler’s archive displayed alongside Alaïa’s creations, allowing visitors to explore the ways in which their shared creative spirit shaped their designs.

Alaïa was known for his impeccable craftsmanship, while Mugler was celebrated for his bold experimentation with shape and form. “Their mutual respect transcended the runway,” as cited in the report, illustrating their mastery of the female form through garments that enhanced elegance, strength, and sensuality. While Alaïa favored intimate settings and cultivated close relationships with his clients, Mugler tended to embrace dramatic spectacles and larger-than-life fashion shows. Yet, they influenced each other deeply—Mugler’s theatrical flair was refined by Alaïa’s structured designs, while Alaïa’s meticulous attention to detail encouraged Mugler to focus on the natural lines of the body.

The collaborative evolution of both designers peaked in the 1980s, during which they elevated glamour, drawing inspiration from the silhouettes of the 1930s and 1950s. The exhibition at the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa stands as a testament to this enduring partnership, while Alaïa’s dedication to preserving his legacy through his foundation ensures the ongoing appreciation of his work and that of Mugler.

Located at 18 rue de la Verrerie, the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa not only houses Alaïa’s collections but also serves as a cultural hub for art, design, and creative expression. The exhibition provides an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the artistry of two legendary couturiers whose mutual admiration and creative exchanges have left a lasting impact on the fashion industry.
