Magpie Thrift will promote sustainability and assist seniors as it prepares for a soft opening on April 1.
A new nonprofit, Magpie Thrift, is set to open on Broadway this spring, taking over the space previously occupied by Lifelong Thrift. The transition comes as Lifelong, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting those living with HIV, shifts its focus to expanding its kitchen and meal services in Georgetown. The decision to close Lifelong Thrift was reported by Capitol Hill Seattle in January of this year.
Magpie Thrift, established by the team at Everly, plans to promote sustainability and consumer ethics through reuse and recycling. “We want the world to love reusing materials and goods as much as we do,” said Tamara Asakawa, the longtime director of Lifelong Thrift. Everly aims to educate the community on recycling practices, manage the distribution of materials to ensure they are reused effectively, and assist individuals, particularly seniors, in downsizing to live independently or transition to new homes.
The retail space, spanning 12,500 square feet across two levels, has housed various businesses since its opening in early 2015, initially as part of the Red Light Vintage family before becoming Lifelong Thrift. According to Seattle Gay News, Magpie Thrift is planning a “soft opening” on April 1.
Magpie Thrift’s proceeds are intended to support various community initiatives, including educating others about recycling and circular practices, assisting seniors in downsizing with dignity, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community to gather. The new store will be located at 312 Broadway E, and updates can be followed through their social media accounts.
