Elgin: A recently opened vintage and retro store, Docs and Frocks, has quickly become a favourite for shoppers in Elgin town centre, thanks to its unique collection and strategic location. Owner Julie Flanighan shares her plans to continue diversifying the shop’s offerings while maintaining its success.
A new vintage and retro shop, Docs and Frocks, has established itself as a popular destination for shoppers in Elgin town centre, just four months after opening its doors. Located at 6 Harrow Inn Close, the store has garnered attention for its eclectic collection of pre-loved and new items, focusing primarily on iconic Doc Martens footwear and vintage dresses.
Owner Julie Flanighan has reported that the initial excitement surrounding the shop’s launch has not waned, with consistent trade even during the winter months. “I think I might have hit the market at the right time,” she remarked, adding that feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their appreciation for the vibrant atmosphere and unique offerings. “They love the bright colours and the atmosphere,” she noted.
Julie has witnessed a diverse customer base, drawing visitors from as far afield as Edinburgh and Glasgow. She highlighted that some shoppers have reportedly travelled specifically to visit her shop, indicating a growing interest beyond the local community. “I have had people come to Elgin just to visit my shop which is amazing,” she stated, underscoring her satisfaction with the customer engagement.
The store’s location is also strategically beneficial. It is situated in a busy area that connects South Street and High Street, which aides in drawing foot traffic. Julie expressed her contentment with the shop’s size and location, noting that it complements the surrounding businesses. “It’s a busy wee close with the barbers and the Little Lunchbox,” she explained. The proximity to the Little Lunchbox, particularly during lunchtime, has contributed positively to the shop’s visibility and customer influx.
Looking towards the future, Julie remains committed to maintaining the shop’s success without necessarily expanding into a larger premises. “Sometimes people say why not get a bigger shop, but I’m happy with the shop that I have at the moment,” she remarked. However, she is considering diversifying her offerings by introducing more male items to attract a wider clientele. “My shop attracts people of all ages which is great to see,” she added.
Docs and Frocks operates on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. According to Julie, plans are underway to stock Doc Martens sandals and summer dresses in the near future, indicating her intention to keep the product range fresh and appealing to the community.
