The acclaimed musical ‘Chicago’ will be performed at the New World School of the Arts under the direction of Matthew Buffalo, featuring a cast of talented students.
The New World School of the Arts (NWSA) is set to showcase a production of the acclaimed musical “Chicago,” with performances directed by theater faculty member Matthew Buffalo. The musical, featuring a score by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, is scheduled for February 28, March 1, and March 7 at 7:30 p.m., as well as matinee performances on March 1 and March 8 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will take place in the Louise O. Gerrits Theater, located at 25 NE Second St., Eighth Floor. Ticket prices are set at $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors, with tickets available for purchase through the NWSA website.
“Chicago” is set against the backdrop of the 1920s, immersing audiences in a world where crime intersects with celebrity, exploring themes of morality, ambition, and the power of fame. This production is characterized as a darkly comedic satire, addressing societal issues through the lens of entertainment and media.
Buffalo expressed his vision for the production, stating, “In directing this production, my goal has been to honor the original spirit of Chicago while bringing a fresh perspective to its narrative.” He emphasized the hard work of the 26-member cast in capturing the essence of the jazz age, infusing it with a vibrant energy reflective of both the original work and contemporary elements influenced by today’s social media landscape.
Rayhana Parris, a college junior playing the role of Velma, articulated the musical’s reflection on societal perceptions of celebrities. “Chicago is about the reality of society and how they view ‘celebrities.’ Celebrities, whose stories are so outrageous that people believe every second of it,” she noted.
Sundari Davis, a senior who is preparing to take on the role of Roxie Hart, shared insights gained through her rehearsal experience, highlighting personal growth in stage confidence. “It’s given me a lot of confidence on stage and off stage, reminding me that it’s okay to have that inner confidence in life and to have my own inner diva at times,” Davis remarked, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance embodied by her character.
This production does come with a content advisory, noting the presence of simulated violence, adult themes and language, as well as elements such as theatrical haze and flashing lights. It is recommended for audiences aged 14 and older.
