A new platform, Olyn, empowers indie filmmakers by allowing them to sell directly to audiences while enabling them to keep a significant share of revenue.

A new streaming service called Olyn is making waves in the independent filmmaking sector by allowing creators to sell their films directly to audiences. This innovative platform is positioned as a possible solution to the distribution struggles that many indie filmmakers face, especially in a landscape dominated by major networks and their extensive marketing budgets.

Olyn, which operates out of California, has been described as a hybrid of Shopify and YouTube. It uses a model that emphasizes social referrals rather than relying on algorithms to determine what content is showcased. This approach aims to spotlight the quality of the films and the effectiveness of grassroots marketing efforts. Notably, the recent release of the Brian Epstein biopic, “Midas Man,” about the legendary manager of The Beatles, marks a significant debut on Olyn, rather than on more traditional streaming giants like Netflix or Amazon.

The motivation behind Olyn’s creation stems from the observed challenges within the indie film industry, where films often remain without distribution for up to a year after premiering at high-profile festivals like Sundance or Toronto. With Olyn, filmmakers can retain an impressive 90 percent of their revenue, which contrasts sharply with the revenue-sharing models of larger platforms that typically take a significant cut. The focus on allowing audiences access to a streamlined streaming experience further enhances Olyn’s appeal.

According to the startup, filmmakers are encouraged to harness their own marketing resources alongside influencers, film critics, and content creators who can help amplify their reach. These distribution partners can embed purchase links within their popular content, blogs, and social media channels, creating a network of opportunities for indie films to gain visibility.

Olyn presents itself not just as an alternative streaming service, but potentially as a transformative model for indie filmmaking that hinges on collaboration and community engagement in the marketing process.
