Merseyside: Oneday is set to launch its ‘Fix It’ initiative on 21 February 2025, providing free repair workshops that encourage upcycling and reduce waste. The programme aims to equip locals with skills for repairing household items while promoting sustainable living within the community.
Oneday, a community-based organisation focused on sustainability and environmental innovation, is launching a new initiative titled ‘Fix It’, which will see the establishment of free repair workshops at Bowring Park and Huyton Village Green Café. This initiative, set to begin on 21 February 2025, aims to provide local residents with the opportunity to repair a variety of household items, thereby promoting a culture of upcycling and decreasing waste.
Beginning next month, attendees will be welcomed to bring broken items ranging from small electrical appliances to jewellery, allowing them to work alongside experts in the repair industry. Over the course of February, March, and April, a total of ten workshops will be held. The schedule includes sessions focused on basic electrical repairs, jewellery enhancements, as well as furniture upcycling. For instance, the first session on 21 February will cover wiring a plug and replacing a fuse, followed by sessions for basic electrical repairs later the same day, and jewellery and watch repairs scheduled for 28 February.
The rising cost of living has led many individuals to discard damaged items instead of seeking affordable repairs. The Fix It initiative aims not only to alleviate financial strain but also to equip the community with practical skills that can extend the life of household items, thus promoting environmentally conscious behaviours.
Highlighting what can be repaired, the workshops will address small electrical items such as toasters, kettles, and hair dryers, as well as providing minor repairs for jewellery and watches. In addition, participants will learn upcycling techniques for frames and mirrors, alongside other DIY restoration skills. Moreover, bicycle repairs will also be accommodated, covering punctures and chain alignments.
Oisin Hennessy, the Fix It Project Lead, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative’s potential impact on the community, stating, “Fix It is about making repairs easy, accessible, and a normal part of life again. Lots of people, including myself, are guilty of throwing away broken electrical items that are often fixable, and I’m really excited to see the impact this service has on the community.” He further elaborated that Fix It is part of Oneday’s broader sustainability initiative, known as ‘grow’, which aims to integrate sustainable living practices into daily routines. Hennessy also acknowledged the contributions of various partners who are integral to the success of this project.
In addition to the workshops, Oneday’s broader mission focuses on transforming Merseyside into sustainable community hubs, where individuals can engage, learn, and partake in efforts towards an environmentally friendly future.
For residents interested in participating, further information and workshop bookings can be accessed through the Bowring Park website. This initiative not only encourages personal empowerment through skill development but also underlines the importance of sustainable choices in fashion and household management.
