The Italian clothing group OVS has launched a major project to build a technological innovation hub in Bari, focusing on digital transformation and sustainability.

Gruppo OVS, a prominent Italian clothing group, has announced the commencement of construction on a new technological innovation hub and multifunctional center in the industrial area of Bari, Puglia. This initiative is part of an investment project launched earlier in 2023 in collaboration with the Puglia region and is now at an advanced stage of implementation.

The new facility aims to tackle significant challenges related to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cyber security, and circular economy practices. The technology hub is geared towards developing projects that emphasize innovative retail solutions, while the multifunctional center has been operational since January, focusing on the recovery of unsold garments.

Spanning 15,000 square meters, the building is designed to house a sophisticated plant capable of reconditioning up to 70,000 garments daily, with a long-term goal of reconditioning 15 million pieces by 2026. The operational strategies within the center are centered around optimizing workflows, integrating intelligent automation technologies to enhance efficiency.

Stefano Beraldo, CEO of OVS Group, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This project represents an important goal in the development plan for our group in the area of digital innovation and sustainability.” This initiative is set to create new economic opportunities and boost employment in the Apulian region, currently employing 55 individuals with a projection to increase to 125 as the center reaches full capacity.

The undertaking illustrates a substantial financial commitment, with a total investment of €33 million, allocated as €19 million towards digital advancements and €14 million for innovative systems emphasizing sustainability within the circular economy. The collaborative effort includes partnerships with esteemed academic institutions, such as the Politecnico di Bari, further reinforcing OVS’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainable practices.

As one of Italy’s largest clothing conglomerates, OVS Spa oversees a vast network of over 2,200 stores, operating under brands such as OVS and Upim, and covering various segments including men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel, as well as beauty and home decor. The company, which has been listed on Euronext Milan since 2015, reported robust sales figures of €1.536 billion and an EBITDA of €182 million in 2023.
