Italian streetwear brand P448 introduces a capsule collection made from the skins of the invasive ta’ape fish, partnering with Conservation International to promote eco-friendly practices.

P448, an Italian streetwear brand, has launched its third capsule collection made from the skins of the bluestripe snapper, locally known in Hawai?i as ta’ape, through a partnership with nonprofit Conservation International. This initiative is part of P448’s broader Project Sustainability, which focuses on using innovative materials to promote environmentally-friendly practices in fashion.

Wayne Kulkin, CEO of P448, stated, “We see using the skins of invasive species in our footwear as an opportunity to help prevent future environmental degradation, while repurposing existing resources.” The capsule aims to raise awareness about the environmental threats posed by the ta’ape—an invasive species that has disrupted Hawaii’s fragile marine ecosystems since its introduction from the South Pacific seven decades ago.

The ta’ape has proliferated across the Hawaiian archipelago, competing with native fish for resources and negatively impacting the local fishing industry. P448’s collaboration with Conservation International is intended to address these challenges by sourcing 2,000 ta’ape skins, initially captured by local fishermen, to create a limited sneaker collection. This approach also supports local economies and food security initiatives, with the meat from the fish being donated to local schools.

Matt Ramsey, Senior Director of Conservation International’s Hawai’i program, emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to invasive species challenges. He remarked, “By removing ta’ape, the initiative benefits Hawaii’s native marine life, feeds communities, and supports the local economy.” The ta’ape was traditionally tanned by native islanders but has not been processed for commercial use until this project.

In developing the ta’ape sneakers, P448 partnered with Aquaborne, a tannery specializing in aquatic leather which utilizes eco-friendly methods. The process avoids harmful chemicals, reducing water and energy usage significantly.

The sneakers, featuring ta’ape leather in various colors, are manufactured with a focus on sustainability, incorporating recycled materials for insoles and other components. Ten percent of sales from the shoes will go towards Conservation International’s ocean protection efforts.

P448 is also committed to raising awareness about invasive species through film. Past sustainability-themed films have garnered recognition at numerous film festivals. The brand proudly holds the Butterfly Mark from Positive Luxury, an accolade reflecting its commitment to high sustainability standards.

As part of its sustainability efforts, the brand emphasizes educational initiatives aimed at influencing the fashion industry towards more regenerative practices. With the ta’ape capsule collection, P448 aims not only to create a fashionable product but also to spotlight the importance of conserving Hawaii’s unique ecosystems. The limited edition sneakers are available for purchase on P448’s website and select retail partners at a price of $298 each.
