On the eve of International Day of Zero Waste, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal emphasizes Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable practices and tackling waste, particularly from the textile industry.

ISLAMABAD – On the eve of International Day of Zero Waste, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, State Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to sustainable waste management and the pursuit of a circular economy. This year, the theme “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles” highlights the pressing need to tackle waste generation, particularly from the textile industry, which significantly contributes to environmental pollution.

Dr. Kharal emphasized the importance of collective action to mitigate waste production. “Transitioning to a circular economy isn’t just an environmental imperative, it’s an economic opportunity,” she stated, underlining the forthcoming National Policy on Circular Economy as a strategic framework aimed at promoting sustainable industrial practices across the nation.

The minister pointed to several flagship initiatives that reflect Pakistan’s commitment to environmental sustainability, including “Living Indus,” a United Nations-recognized ecosystem restoration project, and the “National Action Roadmap on Plastic Pollution.” These initiatives are tailored not only to align with global sustainability objectives but also to address local challenges, such as the prevalence of plastic waste and unsustainable consumption habits.

Dr. Kharal called for collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors, as well as citizen engagement in waste reduction practices. She remarked, “From reducing food waste to supporting recycling, every action counts,” and recognized the significance of community-led initiatives and partnerships with corporations that enhance the overall impact of sustainability efforts.

In closing, she advocates for a unified approach to waste management, asserting, “Together, we can turn the tide on waste, building a cleaner, greener Pakistan for future generations.” This statement encapsulates the commitment of the Pakistani government to create a sustainable environment through proactive measures and community involvement.
