Pyratex, a Spanish textile company, has introduced a new initiative to source cotton entirely from Spain, enhancing local production and reducing environmental impact.

Pyratex, a Spanish textile company recognized for its commitment to sustainable textiles, has unveiled a new supply chain initiative aimed at utilizing cotton grown entirely within Spain. This launch aligns with the growing trend of promoting local sourcing in response to concerns surrounding environmental footprints and the carbon emissions typically associated with long-distance transport.

The company notes that, despite 99% of cotton being cultivated outside of Europe—primarily in Asia due to its favorable climate—Spain and Greece contribute less than 1% to the global cotton production. This initiative aims to shift that narrative by creating a 0 km supply chain that draws exclusively from Spanish cotton.

Pyratex has secured cotton cultivation on 400 hectares across the regions of Seville and Córdoba. The cotton harvested from these areas undergoes ginning before being transported to Portugal to complete the spinning and knitting processes. This local sourcing strategy is designed to minimize logistics and cut down on environmental impact.

By collaborating with local cotton ginners, Pyratex enhances traceability and quality control within its supply chain, further underscored by the stringent European Union regulations that govern cotton production. These regulations ensure that the cotton remains GMO-free, adheres to established labor laws, and is cultivated through water-efficient practices.

As part of this new initiative, Pyratex has introduced the Pyratex Solea fabric collection, paying homage to a traditional Andalusian flamenco style and the region from which the cotton originates. This collection emphasizes the company’s focus on blending cultural heritage with modern sustainable practices.

Pyratex operates as both a research and development entity and a supplier of eco-innovative textiles across Europe and America. Their overarching goal remains the replacement of environmentally harmful materials with responsible alternatives. The company specializes in creating fabrics and knitwear that utilize natural, bio-based, and recycled materials while maintaining a certified and traceable supply chain.

With the launch of the Pyratex Solea collection, Pyratex continues to further its objective of promoting local, transparent, and sustainable fashion initiatives directly sourced from Spain.
