Quinn Lemley’s one-woman show ‘Rita Hayworth: The Heat Is On’ features a big band and celebrates women’s empowerment while raising funds for music education programs.

Quinn Lemley, a multifaceted artist renowned for her passion for classic jazz and lounge music, is currently captivating audiences with her one-woman show centered on the life of screen icon Rita Hayworth, titled “Rita Hayworth: The Heat Is On.” The production features a vibrant eleven-piece big band and showcases a musical journey that mirrors Hayworth’s remarkable life story.

In a recent conversation, Lemley shared her deep admiration for Hayworth, acknowledging the actress not only as a stylistic inspiration but also highlighting her trailblazing role for women in entertainment. “Though she was not a musician, I love the classics,” Lemley stated, listing artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee among her musical influences. Additionally, she expressed her fondness for contemporary pop icons like Adele and Lady Gaga, mentioning that Cher remained a personal idol and an integral part of her childhood, exemplified by her collection of Cher Barbie Dolls.

The performance of “Rita Hayworth: The Heat Is On” encompasses both music and theatrical elements, running for 90 minutes with five distinct costume changes. Lemley portrays Hayworth while intertwining poignant monologues that delve into themes of women’s empowerment and resilience. “It’s about a woman’s power and resilience, and really owning all the things she accomplished,” Lemley explained. She emphasized Hayworth’s groundbreaking achievements, noting that the actress was the first to marry Prince Aly Khan and was instrumental in advocating for her daughter’s rights concerning inheritance.

Lemley’s show is not just a celebration of Hayworth’s life, but it also aims to raise awareness and funds for music education programs in underserved urban schools. This initiative stemmed from Lemley’s collaboration with the Johnny Mercer Foundation on her forthcoming album, which focuses on the Great American Songbook. “And it’s exciting, because there’s this program called ‘Accentuate the Positive’ which goes in and brings music programs to underserved, inner-city schools, K-12,” she revealed, highlighting the significant impact of music on personal and collaborative development among students.

In recognition of her artistic contributions, Lemley recently received accolades, winning Broadway World’s Best Cabaret Singer for 2024, which she described as an unexpected yet delightful New Year’s present. Lemley also has several projects in the pipeline, including a remix and rerelease of her EP “Swinging Hot Tomato,” showcasing six swing-inspired tracks celebrating femininity and the allure of classic nightlife culture.

As she continues to tour with her show in London and prepare for future musical endeavors, Lemley remains committed to celebrating the legacies of classic artists while also infusing modern style into her work.
