Chapakhowa: On February 11, 2023, Sadiya College organised a workshop on Solid Waste Management and Sustainability, featuring expert talks and practical activities for over 50 students, emphasizing environmental education and support from government and educational bodies.

On February 11, 2023, Sadiya College, located in Chapakhowa, Tinsukia district, hosted a Sustainable Lifestyle Workshop focused on “Solid Waste Management, Vermicomposting and Rain Water Harvesting.” The event was a collaborative effort between the Eco Club of Sadiya College, the Department of Zoology, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of the college. Organised under the ‘Environment Education Programme’, the workshop received support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) of the Government of India and was implemented by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC).

The workshop saw the participation of over 50 students who were joined by their teachers from various high and higher secondary schools within the Sadiya Education Block. The inaugural session featured a welcome speech from Dr Nakul Neog, the Coordinator of the Eco Club, who also underscored the objectives of the workshop. Subsequently, Dr Bhupen Chutia, the Principal of Sadiya College, delivered the inaugural address and formally inaugurated the session.

A series of educational talks were conducted throughout the day, beginning with Dr Jai Dayal Mali, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology at Sadiya College, who spoke on “Mission Life and Sustainable Development Goals.” This was followed by a presentation on rainwater harvesting by Dr Nipen Nayak, also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, but from Tinsukia College.

Jyoti Soreng, a Project Research Scientist-I in the Department of Zoology at Sadiya College, led the next session on Solid Waste Management. This segment of the workshop included a practical hands-on activity where students engaged in the segregation of solid waste. The final session was conducted by Shumita Thausen, focusing on the topic of vermicomposting.

At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees were awarded certificates by Dr Bhupen Chutia alongside other dignitaries present. The event wrapped up with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Jyotshna Keot, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany. Dr Dipjyoti Kalita, also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, was responsible for anchoring the entire workshop.

The initiative highlighted the commitment of Sadiya College to environmental education and sustainable practices among youth within the region.
