Saudi Arabia: The Saudi Fashion Commission has unveiled the Sustainable Ihram Initiative, aimed at recycling Ihram garments for pilgrims. This collaborative effort aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s environmental goals, promoting textile waste repurposing and sustainable fashion practices in the Kingdom.

The Saudi Fashion Commission has announced its latest effort aimed at promoting sustainability in the fashion industry, unveiled during a press conference at the Islamic Arts Biennale. The initiative, known as the Sustainable Ihram Initiative, focuses on the recycling of Ihram garments used by pilgrims, with the goal of collecting, sorting, and repurposing textile waste to create new, eco-friendly Ihram clothing.

The initiative, which aligns with the broader Saudi Vision 2030 environmental goals, is a collaborative effort that includes partnerships with key players in sustainability, notably the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) and Tadweem. SIRC is recognised for its expertise in waste management and the circular economy, while Tadweem focuses on sustainable fashion. Together, they aim to transform used Ihram garments into new sustainable options, showcasing the potential for textile recycling within the fashion sector.

In advancing their mission, the Saudi Fashion Commission has also teamed up with Sanko Textile, a group established in sustainable textiles, and RE&UP, a company known for its innovative textile-to-textile recycling technology. This collaboration further underscores the environmental ambitions of the initiative and its potential to foster a sustainable textile ecosystem in the Kingdom.

Saudi Fashion Commission chief executive Burak Cakmak expressed the commitment of the initiative, stating, “The Sustainable Ihram Initiative demonstrates our commitment to innovation in sustainable practices, honouring the cultural and spiritual significance of the Ihram while safeguarding our planet for future generations.” He stressed the importance of promoting a vibrant and sustainable fashion industry that adheres to global sustainability standards and encourages conscious consumption and recycling.

The Sustainable Ihram Initiative not only addresses the immediate need for sustainable garment solutions but also seeks to elevate consumer awareness regarding textile recycling and foster the development of a circular textile economy within Saudi Arabia. This initiative marks a significant development in the Kingdom’s fashion landscape, promoting the integration of sustainable practices into its future.
