In a recent interview, actress Sharon Stone shares the personal importance of her iconic white mini-dress from Basic Instinct and her journey to retain ownership of her costumes.
Sharon Stone, renowned actress and painter, has recently shared insights regarding her iconic white mini-dress from the film “Basic Instinct,” which she wore during her groundbreaking interrogation scene over three decades ago. In an interview with The Times of London, Stone detailed the significance of retaining the dress and its personal importance to her.
Reflecting on her early career, Stone recalled an experience from the 1980s when she starred in a television film. After filming was complete, the studio sold off her wardrobe items at a discounted price, a move that made her uncomfortable, particularly with the thought that some production crew members might acquire her personal items, including underwear. “I thought, ‘Never again,’” Stone stated, a sentiment that prompted her to negotiate the terms of her future contracts.
From that point forward, she ensured that she would retain ownership of her costumes from films, unless they were studio rentals. This decision proved fortunate, as her role as Catherine Tramell in “Basic Instinct,” released in 1992, solidified her status in Hollywood. Stone mentioned in her interview, “I keep the white minidress from Basic Instinct in a safe but have a ton of shoes from that movie in my closet, like black split-toe Gucci heels and strappy gold-studded ones. The rest of the costumes are in storage.”
The actress also delved into her memorable choice of attire for the Oscars in 1998, where she opted for a simple white shirt instead of the expected glamorous gown. This choice marked her first red carpet appearance with her then-husband, newspaper editor Phil Bronstein. She explained her rationale for the outfit, saying, “I’d just got married and I thought it would be a cool, sexy tribute to a newspaperman to wear a white shirt with his initials on it. Since he wasn’t in the business it was a nice way to bring him into my world.”
Stone’s reflections offer a glimpse into her personal history as a notable figure in the entertainment industry, illustrating how her experiences have influenced her approach to fashion and public appearances.
