Los Angeles: Sisters Jojo Friendman and Brooke launch SheStyles, a pop-up shop providing fashionable clothing at no cost to young women. Addressing textile waste, the initiative promotes environmental sustainability through upcycling, offering stylish options while fostering community support.

In Los Angeles, a unique pop-up shopping experience named SheStyles has emerged, offering young women the opportunity to select fashionable items at no cost. This initiative was founded by sisters Jojo Friendman and Brooke, originally conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic when they were clearing out their closets.

The inception of SheStyles came after the sisters began to investigate the fate of donated clothing. Jojo Friendman stated that her findings were disheartening, revealing that a significant portion of these donations ultimately ends up in landfills. According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, less than 15% of textiles, which encompasses clothing, are recycled, highlighting a pressing environmental issue.

In response to this concern, the duo established a series of pop-up shops across various locations in the Los Angeles area. These events are designed to cater specifically to teenagers who may lack access to retail experiences that allow them to choose their desired clothing items freely. The sisters aim not only to provide stylish options for young women but also to contribute positively to environmental sustainability.

As part of its ongoing commitment to ecological responsibility, SheStyles has launched a new initiative this year focusing on the quality control of clothing that may not be suitable for their racks. The initiative aims to redirect these items to organisations that specialise in upcycling, transforming the material into new products, such as fabric furniture. This innovative approach aligns with SheStyles’ broader mission to mitigate waste while offering valuable resources to the community.
