The luxury brand’s 15th anniversary show in Jammu and Kashmir sparks protests amidst concerns over cultural values and local sensitivities.
A fashion show organized by the luxury brand ‘Shivan & Narresh’ is currently underway in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, where it is generating considerable attention. Founded by Shivaan Bhatia and Naresh Kukreja, the brand is renowned for its uniquely printed luxury loungewear and swimwear. The event, which celebrates the brand’s 15th anniversary, notably promotes luxury skiing wear but has encountered backlash from various political and religious groups.
The protests against the fashion show stem from concerns expressed by these organizations, which argue that the event contradicts local cultural values. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has voiced his disapproval, stating that the fashion show is an affront to local sensitivities, particularly during the month of Ramadan. Abdullah has also called for a response from local authorities regarding the organization of the show.
‘Shivan & Narresh’ has established itself prominently in India’s luxury fashion landscape. The brand was first introduced at the Cannes Film Festival and is recognized as India’s first luxury holiday brand. The designers made their mark as the first Indian brand to showcase at the prestigious ‘Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim’ and the ‘Swimwear Association of Florida’s SwimShow’ in 2012.
The brand specializes in a diverse range of offerings, including holiday, cruise, resort, beach, swimwear, accessories, and celebratory attire. Its exclusive retail locations include Vasant Kunj in Delhi, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, Kala Ghoda in Mumbai, Ashok Nagar in Bengaluru, and Udyog Vihar in Gurugram, along with stockists across multiple Indian cities such as Ahmedabad, Chennai, Surat, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Raipur, and Amritsar.
Bhatia and Kukreja, both alumni of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and graduates of Istituto Europeo di Design, have received various accolades for their contributions to fashion. Their achievements include the Swarovski Most Creative Designer of the Year Award in 2007, Best Emerging Designers at the Marie Claire Fashion Awards, Best Resort Wear at the Elle Style Awards, and the Young Achievers Award from the Embassy of India.
The brand’s designs have gained popularity among both Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities. Notable figures such as Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, Dita Von Teese, Nicki Minaj, Padma Lakshmi, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor, and Shilpa Shetty have been seen wearing their creations, highlighting the brand’s prominent presence in the fashion industry.
