Olivia Gilcher from Detroit strikes gold after purchasing a mystery bundle online, discovering a vintage Gucci watch valued at nearly $2,900.

In an unexpected twist of fate, Olivia Gilcher, a student from Detroit, Michigan, recently struck gold after purchasing a mystery bundle of old jewelry online for $65 (£50). The purchase was made via Facebook, where mystery boxes have become a popular trend, enticing bargain hunters seeking concealed treasures.

Upon opening her 8-pound bag of jewelry, Gilcher was astonished to discover a vintage Gucci watch, a piece she had long considered to be the epitome of luxury. The watch, identified as a Gucci change bezel 1100L from the late 1980s, is not just priced at a mere sentimental value; Gilcher estimates its current retail value to be around $2,900 (£2,255). “At first, I didn’t believe it was real,” Gilcher recounted, speaking to What’s The Jam. Her background working at a luxury watch company proved invaluable, as she was able to verify the watch’s authenticity by examining the engraved logo, SKU number, and the overall construction of the piece.

Delving deeper, Gilcher opened the back of the watch to check the movement, which further confirmed its legitimacy. This specific model was originally retailed between $500 and $1,000 in the late 1980s; adjusting for inflation, this equates to approximately $1,493 to $2,985 in 2025. Despite her excitement over such a remarkable find, Gilcher decided not to keep the watch. She has since listed it online for $550 (£427).

“The watch is truly a dream piece for me, something I’ve wanted for years,” Gilcher said. However, as a college student, the prospect of earning extra income was also appealing. “I tried it on, and it was a little tight – that felt like my sign that I should let it go. My logic is: If I can’t stop thinking about it, I’ll buy one for myself in the future.”

Gilcher’s interest in mystery bundles was sparked at a local thrift store, leading her to frequently purchase such bags and resell notable items. She emphasized that her venture is driven more by passion than profit. “I don’t actually make much of a profit from selling jewelry – it’s more of a passion project and a way to promote sustainability by giving these pieces a second life,” she explained. She has accumulated quite a collection over time and now curates mystery jewelry bags to ensure unique finds are appreciated rather than discarded. “Each bag is filled with unique finds, and my goal is to ensure that every piece is appreciated rather than discarded,” she added.

Gilcher’s experience highlights both the thrill of the unknown in e-commerce and the potential for unexpected rewards through platforms that connect consumers with curated selections of items.
