The Soroptimist Club Würzburg hosts ‘FairTragen,’ a second-hand clothing market to promote ethical practices and support women’s rights in the clothing industry on March 22.
In Germany, the average person purchases over 60 pieces of clothing each year, a trend that has significant environmental implications as many of these garments are discarded shortly after acquisition. In response to this issue, the Soroptimist Club Würzburg has initiated a charity clothing market named “FairTragen,” aiming to promote sustainable fashion practices and support women’s rights in the clothing industry.
The upcoming second-hand market is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 22, from 11 AM to 5 PM at the Burkardushaus, located near the Cathedral in Würzburg. Attendees can anticipate a diverse selection of items, including blouses, jackets, pants, skirts, dresses, coats, shoes, bags, and a variety of accessories and costume jewelry specifically for women and young girls. Admission to the event is offered at no cost.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit “FEMNET,” a Bonn-based organization that advocates for women’s rights within the clothing sector. The charity market is organized in collaboration with Zukunftshaus Würzburg, along with local clothing stores WOTE and JAC. In addition, Anne Salwiczek from “Der Fingerhut” in Würzburg will provide consulting and alteration services to attendees.
The Soroptimist Club Würzburg is part of the international network known as Soroptimist International, which comprises professional women dedicated to improving the status of women and promoting ethical practices, human rights, equality, development, and peace. Established in 1980, the Würzburg club currently has 35 active members, all of whom volunteer to advance the organization’s mission within their community.
