Sustainablee, a lifestyle brand founded by a corporate sustainability expert, aims to connect consumers with sustainably made products by local artisans, while fostering community engagement and environmental responsibility.
Sustainablee, a lifestyle brand dedicated to locally-sourced sustainable products, was born out of a decade of experience in corporate sustainability and waste management, according to an interview with the founder featured in Satyn Mag. The inception of the brand was driven by a desire to bridge a significant gap in the market: consumers’ limited access to sustainable products made by local artisans. Recognizing the skills and creativity of local craftspeople, the founder aimed not only to promote environmentally friendly products but also to provide fair opportunities for these artisans to grow their businesses.
Launched in 2018, Sustainablee features a carefully curated selection of items made from upcycled materials. The founder highlighted that the motivation behind creating the brand was not just personal, but a collective effort to build community awareness and promote environmental responsibility. By participating in the Saturday Good Market, the brand had an opportunity to test its initial products, garnering positive feedback from early customers, which validated its direction.
As the business evolved, Sustainablee expanded its product range from just five items to over 25, categorized into five main areas, with a presence in various channel partners in Colombo, as well as the South Coast and overseas. The team attributes their growth to strong customer engagement and the support of their partners. The founder mentioned, “Their enthusiasm and appreciation of our products and what we do has been a great motivation.”
Challenges emerged as the business sought to identify consumer demand and source suitable suppliers committed to sustainable practices. The founder explained that ensuring all suppliers adhere to eco-friendly production processes has been vital. Collaborating with small cottage industries, home-based seamstresses, and women’s community groups across the island, Sustainablee has worked closely with these partners to refine their skills and ensure high-quality production.
A milestone for Sustainablee came in 2024 with the opening of a physical show space in Colombo, enabling direct interaction with customers and providing a venue for them to explore the story behind the products. This development marked a significant advancement since the brand’s inception. The founder expressed gratitude for the support received from partners and suppliers, emphasizing the integral role their feedback plays in steering the brand forward.
The daily operations of Sustainablee encompass various responsibilities, including managing customer orders, maintaining inventory, and overseeing product development and marketing strategies. The founder remarked on the essential nature of these routine tasks, noting, “We love what we do, and with each sale we are able to help our community partners and motivate them to keep producing.”
Looking forward, Sustainablee aims to further expand its product offerings and explore export markets, indicating a commitment to growth and outreach. The founder concluded with advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, stressing the importance of perseverance, clear vision, and adapting to market needs while staying true to core business values.
With significant strides made since its inception, Sustainablee continues to embody its mission of providing quality, sustainable products while championing local artisans and supporting community livelihoods.
