Templa’s new biodegradable down puffer jacket is set to change the fashion industry by reducing carbon footprints and enhancing sustainability.

Templa, a sustainable fashion brand, has partnered with ALLIED Feather + Down to create an innovative biodegradable down puffer jacket, designed to decompose completely in approximately five years when placed in an anaerobic environment. This outerwear aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional production methods.

The new jacket incorporates 800-fill power down insulation combined with biodegradable synthetic fabrics, making it a notable addition to eco-conscious apparel. The trimmings for the design are produced by AAG, while the silhouettes are crafted by Templa. Matthew Betcher, creative director at ALLIED Feather + Down, emphasized the suitability of down for use in sustainable clothing initiatives. “Not only is it biodegradable, but it is recyclable and boasts an exceedingly low carbon footprint as a raw material. It’s the perfect insulation to combine with biodegradable fabrics and trims,” he stated, speaking to DesignBoom Magazine.

The jacket is slated for launch in September 2025 as part of Templa’s Fall/Winter 2025 – Edition 12 Collection. Leading up to its release, Templa and ALLIED Feather + Down have conducted testing on their outerwear, ensuring that all fill, trims, and fabrics are 99 percent biodegradable. This achievement has been validated through tests conducted by Amni Soul Eco by Solvay and CiCLO.

Furthering their commitment to sustainable practices, ALLIED Feather + Down has initiated the Future Now program in collaboration with AAG and Templa. This initiative includes the Designing to Disappear project, which aims to create recyclable outerwear using biomaterials.

In recognition of their efforts, the biodegradable down puffer jacket has been awarded the 2024 ISPO Award. “It is about making responsible choices for meaningful change. And we’re grateful that our efforts, alongside AAG and Allied Feather + Down, have been acknowledged by our industry leaders, reinforcing our belief in the power of collaboration for the greater good,” said Anati Rakocz, Founding Partner at Templa.

The biodegradable down puffer jacket represents a forward-thinking step in the fashion industry’s journey towards sustainability, indicating a significant shift in how outerwear is designed and produced.
