Fashion is experiencing a unique resurgence of interest in vintage styles, with a notable focus on iconic handbags that have stood the test of time. This spring, among the most sought-after accessories is the Bayswater, a classic top-handle leather bag from Mulberry, which first debuted in 2003. Aged 22 years, the Bayswater is being hailed as an essential It bag, representing both elegance and longevity in the fashion world.

The Bayswater, which is available in 14 different colors on Mulberry’s official website, has garnered a diverse following that spans generations. While originally popular among fashion-savvy women in their 30s and 40s, it is now capturing the attention of Gen Z. Videos on platforms like TikTok feature enthusiastic young influencers showcasing their recent acquisitions and unboxings of the £1,095 bag. Some individuals, seeking more budget-friendly options, are successfully locating vintage Bayswaters in second-hand shops, with one influencer sharing her excitement about purchasing hers for just £50, along with footage of her restoring its well-worn leather.

In its early days, the Bayswater quickly became a favorite among celebrities. Figures such as Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and Sienna Miller were often seen sporting the bag, alongside international stars like Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. At its launch, the bag was priced at £495, which, while not inexpensive, was seen as reasonable given the quality and craftsmanship involved. Made in Mulberry’s factory in Somerset, each bag is crafted by roughly 35 artisans, contributing to its reputation for durability and elegance.

The popularity of the Bayswater remains undiminished after two decades. Its design has seen subtle variations over the years, but its core features—a single flap, top handles, and ‘postman’s’ lock—have largely remained unchanged. The resurgence of interest in the bag can be linked to a few significant trends: the revival of early 2000s fashion among younger audiences, a growing emphasis on sustainable fashion choices, and a shift towards larger bags that provide versatility.

In keeping with these trends, Mulberry launched the Mulberry Exchange in 2020, which allows customers to trade in their old bags for credit towards new or pre-loved styles, effectively promoting circular fashion. According to resale platform Vestiaire Collective, Mulberry ranks among the top three bestselling handbag brands in the UK, with the Bayswater in particularly high demand.

Looking ahead, Mulberry is also expanding its offerings, with plans to introduce the Soft Bayswater in 2025. This reimagined version features longer straps for shoulder wear and a slightly softer structure, aligning with contemporary style preferences while paying homage to its iconic predecessor. While the Bayswater remains a luxury item, its price point is considered moderate when compared to similar styles from luxury brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, or Chanel.

As interest in the Bayswater continues to grow, consumers find themselves with various options. Whether purchasing a new one, hunting for vintage finds, or borrowing from a family member, the return of the Bayswater signifies the enduring popularity and timeless appeal of classic handbag designs in today’s fashion landscape.
