In the latest installment of Naoyuki Ju’s series, explore the stylish appeal and rich history of the Hermès Boucle Sellier, a vintage treasure that continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts.

A vibrant presence in the Japanese vintage scene, the “Grimoire” select vintage shop, which opened in 2008, has evolved into a multifaceted platform with the establishment of VCM (@vcm_vintagecollectionmall) in 2021. This comprehensive vintage platform is renowned for hosting Japan’s largest vintage festival, the “VCM VINTAGE MARKET,” and operates several unique outlets including the “VCM MARKET BOOTH” at Shibuya Parco, a reservation-only Hermès jewelry shop called “VCM COLLECTION STORE,” and an event space referred to as “VCM GALLERY.” In an expansion of their influence in the vintage world, the first book titled “Vintage Collectables by VCM” is set to be published in October 2023. This book aims to showcase the diverse activities centered around vintage items while providing a networking platform for vintage shops and fans throughout Japan.

In his ongoing series titled “the must-buy vintage of the Reiwa era,” Naoyuki Ju identifies hidden vintage treasures that remain affordable yet charming. The 41st installment focuses on the “Hermès” Boucle Sellier, a vintage jewelry piece that speaks to the rich legacy of the luxury brand. The Boucle Sellier, which translates to “saddle maker’s buckle,” was created in 1946, just a year after World War II, and over its extended availability has developed numerous variations and sizes, appealing to a wide audience, including female customers who favor larger pieces like the TGM (Très Grand Modèle).

Ju highlights the distinctive characteristics of the Boucle Sellier, noting that while it is often associated with traditional masculinity due to its larger size, it is also embraced by women. He describes a stylish approach for wearing the piece, suggesting that displaying the pointed end outward can add an element of flair. The Boucle Sellier symbolizes the origins of Hermès, which began as a harness maker, and stands out for its classical and elegant aesthetic, thanks to its flat-form curb chain design. Ju emphasizes that the piece pairs well with tailored outfits, and over time, its inner chain may darken, enhancing its visual appeal through aging—similar to the characteristics appreciated in denim.

The Boucle Sellier features a range of sizes and materials, with combinations of silver and yellow gold, and even exclusive diamond-embellished versions likely made for VIP clientele. Ju points out that the versatility and enduring popularity of the Boucle Sellier result in it being relatively accessible in the current market compared to other more rare Hermès vintage items. Prices for a GM model are generally around 800,000 yen, while an MM typically starts at around 700,000 yen. Given the potential for price increases in the future, Ju advises those interested to consider making a purchase soon.

Edited by Koji Yamada, the narrative by Naoyuki Ju continues to illuminate the enduring charm of vintage fashion, particularly the Hermès Boucle Sellier, as it captures the attention of fashion enthusiasts across Japan.
