Chicago thrift flipper Ashley Cano stumbles upon the iconic gown worn by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, prompting a viral social media moment and discussions on resale value.
Fans of the popular HBO series “Sex and the City” were taken aback when Ashley Cano, a thrift flipper from Chicago, discovered Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic Vera Wang wedding dress at a Goodwill store for just $18.99. The gown, recognized for its striking design, was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in the franchise’s first movie, released in 2008.
Cano, who resells items on Poshmark, came across the dress during her shopping trip. The dress features a white strapless bodice adorned with layers of soft, feathery fabric cascading down to the ground. Expressing her astonishment, Cano shared her find in a TikTok video, exclaiming, “Vera freaking Wang. I can not believe that I found this dress at Goodwill for $18.99.”
In the film, the character Carrie Bradshaw wears the dress during a Vogue photoshoot for an article exploring the concept of 40-year-old brides. Following the release of Cano’s video, it quickly gained traction on social media, drawing comments from numerous “SATC” fans eager to purchase the dress. Many speculated on its potential resale value, with one TikTok user estimating it could be worth around $4,000.
While some encouraged Cano to keep the dress for herself, she humorously dismissed the notion, saying, “No diet could ever have me making it work.” As of now, she has not yet listed the iconic piece for sale and admits she is uncertain about how to correctly market such a unique item.
In a twist of fate, Cano plans to use any profits from the dress to assist with her divorce expenses. “Low key been stressing over my lawyer bills for my divorce,” she shared in the comments, adding, “I needed a blessing. Didn’t think it would come in the way of a wedding dress but I’m not complaining.”
“Sex and the City,” which originally aired from 1998 to 2004, is based on a column by Candace Bushnell published in the New York Observer. Following its successful run, two films were produced, and most of the original cast returned for the spinoff series “And Just Like That…,” which is set to release its third season later this year.
