A YouTube video showcasing a Burberry coat found at a Winnipeg thrift store has drawn significant attention, sparking discussions about luxury items in the thrifting community.

A recent discovery of a Burberry coat at a thrift store in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has garnered significant attention on YouTube, attracting over 30,000 views since it was posted on October 5, 2024, by a user identified as @Msfili. In the video, the thrifter details their find at a Salvation Army store, showcasing the designer piece adorned with the iconic Burberry label.

The video features Daniel Huscroft, the thrifter’s business partner, presenting the beige hooded coat. He emphasizes the coat’s appealing plaid inner lining, stating, “that’s what everyone wants to see.” As the clip progresses, Huscroft and @Msfili discuss the coat’s condition and the reasoning behind their decision-making regarding purchasing the item.

Speaking to Newsweek, the poster recalled encountering Burberry coats multiple times while thrifting, noting that they typically retail for over $1,000. Although the latest coat was used, @Msfili described it as being in “great wearable condition” with only slight wear. Ultimately, they chose not to purchase the coat due to its smaller size, which would pose a challenge for resale within their market. “So, I decided to leave it for another person who can enjoy it or resell it,” they explained.

The decision to leave the coat behind reflects broader trends within the thrift store industry. According to a report by Research and Markets published in August 2024, thrift store revenue is expected to have increased at a compound annual growth rate of 4.5 percent, reaching $14.2 billion over the past five years. The same report highlighted a 1.4 percent growth in 2023 alone, attributing this growth to rising consumer spending and an increasing demand for sustainable shopping methods.

Despite the coat’s luxury branding and a price of $70, the thrifter underscored that their practice is not to buy every appealing item. They stated, “Contrary to popular belief, we don’t always buy everything that’s a great deal,” illustrating their thought process behind leaving behind the Burberry coat as well as other high-end items in previous thrifting experiences, including brands like Coach and Armani.

Audience reactions to the video have been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers expressing their admiration for the find. Commenters such as @suzzanimalchannel1030 and @trinasthings noted the attractiveness of the coat and its reasonable price, while others like @dsilver1999 pointed out that smaller sizes can be difficult to sell, reflecting broader awareness among thrifters regarding size and resale values.

The phenomenon of thrifting continues to captivate both enthusiasts and casual shoppers alike, fostering a community around sustainable fashion choices and the thrill of uncovering hidden gems.
