Independent designer Timo Kurz launches ‘Mephisto,’ a collection that intertwines artisanal traditions with themes of generational trauma and identity.
Independent designer Timo Kurz has launched “Mephisto,” a striking fashion collection that delves into the complexities of artisanal heritage and psychological tension, shaped by a family tradition of shoemaking that spans over a century. This collection serves as a reflection on generational trauma, emphasizing the weight of inherited traditions while questioning the boundaries between preservation and reinvention.
“Mephisto” reinterprets traditional craft techniques, such as leather moulding and precise construction, distorting them into sculptural silhouettes that challenge conventional forms. The garments are designed to appear both restrained and unraveled, mirroring the complex ways trauma can alter perception. The collection encompasses motifs of cyclical entrapment, fractured identity, and the passage of time, using material choices and layering to create a visual narrative that balances control and chaos.
The creative process behind “Mephisto” has evolved into a journey of deconstructing personal history for Kurz. He describes the collection as “both a tribute and a rebellion against what was inherited,” showcasing how fashion can serve as a medium for expressing complex emotional landscapes and personal narratives.
Speaking about his approach to design, Kurz stated, “My work exists at the intersection of traditional craft and modern experimentation. While my foundation lies in precise tailoring and artisanal techniques, I push beyond conventions through deconstruction, sculptural silhouettes, and material innovation.” He emphasizes the importance of sustainability through upcycling and zero-waste methodologies, viewing these practices as not only responsible choices but also as opportunities to challenge and reconstruct narratives embedded in fashion.
The collection is a multifaceted exploration of memory, transformation, and craft. Kurz aims to evoke an emotional response from viewers, creating pieces that resonate deeply and feel like memories materialized into form. He operates outside the traditional fashion system, focusing on artistic expression and conceptual storytelling instead of mass production.
“Mephisto” is punctuated by intricate textures and raw construction, presenting a dialogue between past and present that invites contemplation of inherited traditions and personal narratives. This examination of craft and memory culminates in a collection that speaks to the complexities of identity while exploring the potential for change and transformation.
The collection’s visual representation is enhanced by photography from Cris Cerdeira, with retouching by Maca Ibsen. The modeling was provided by Tory from Modelwerk, with makeup by Angelique Waltenberg, underscoring the collaborative effort behind Kurz’s artistic vision.
As an emerging designer, Timo Kurz continues to cultivate his unique identity within the fashion industry, seeking to challenge and redefine the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship while engaging in a broader conversation about personal and collective heritage.
