Timothée Chalamet stuns in an all-black ensemble at the BAFTAs, channeling musical icons while the red carpet showcases a blend of gothic and vibrant styles.

Timothée Chalamet made a striking appearance on the red carpet for the BAFTAs, where he opted for an all-black ensemble reminiscent of legendary rock icon Mick Jagger. While he has shown a variety of styles in previous appearances—such as riding a Lime bike in London and sporting a pink tracksuit in Berlin—this outfit was notably more subdued. He wore a black cropped jacket from Bottega Veneta, complemented by matching trousers and shoes, aligning with a goth-tinged theme that prevailed throughout the award ceremony.

Chalamet’s style is infused with visual nods to music legends, specifically Bob Dylan, as he prepares for his upcoming role in the film “A Complete Unknown.” His stylist, Taylor McNeil, shared the inspiration image on her Instagram account, showcasing the influence of Dylan’s outfits on Chalamet’s fashion choices.

On the red carpet, Cynthia Erivo brought her own unique flair, donning a lace dress by Louis Vuitton, while Zoe Saldana chose a dramatic black gown that evoked an evil queen aesthetic, crafted by Saint Laurent. Gwendoline Christie also embraced the goth theme with a long, cobwebby hairstyle and a black satin dress featuring torn sleeves by Giles Deacon. Designer Vera Wang completed her ensemble with a black and white cut-out dress, topped with an oversized biker jacket.

Menswear also made a statement at the event, with Jeff Goldblum attending the ceremony alongside his dancer wife Emilie Livingston. Goldblum sported a tuxedo adorned with iridescent black and green feathers, designed by Loewe. Will Sharpe joined the ranks of all-black ensemble wearers, enhancing his look with classic movie star sunglasses and black nail varnish.

The use of black extended beyond goth motifs alone; it is a traditional color for red carpet events. Actors such as Adrien Brody, Orlando Bloom, and Jesse Eisenberg were seen in classic black tuxedos. Meanwhile, stars like Pamela Anderson and Mikey Madison opted for all-white outfits, highlighting the contrasting color palette. Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez were also noted for their dresses that featured both black and white elements.

In addition to the darker tones, vibrant prints and colors were represented as well. Ariana Grande captured attention with her Louis Vuitton dress featuring an oversized frilled pink skirt, presenting a more whimsical approach to red carpet fashion. Colman Domingo made a bold impression with a scarf-print lined outfit complete with studded gloves and pointed shoes, which was identified as the standout menswear look of the evening. Isabella Rossellini offered a mature take on comfort with her robe adorned with roses, while Saoirse Ronan opted for simplicity and elegance in pale aquamarine, also created by Louis Vuitton.

The resurgence of goth fashion, which traces its origins to the 1970s UK scene, has seen a revival in recent times. London designers like Dilara Findikoglu, Chopova Lowena, and 16Arlington have embraced this trend. Recent cultural phenomena, including the Netflix series “Wednesday” and the long-awaited album from the goth band The Cure, may have contributed to this fashion direction. The Gothic aesthetic was also a significant presence at the Grammy Awards the month prior, with notable figures such as Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga contributing to this stylized narrative. The anticipation remains whether this trend will continue to influence the upcoming Oscars red carpet next month.
