During the promotion of his film ‘A Complete Unknown,’ Timothée Chalamet showcases a vintage-inspired fashion style featuring True Religion denim, breathing new life into the brand.
During the press tour for his upcoming film, A Complete Unknown, scheduled for release in 2024, Timothée Chalamet showcased an eye-catching and unconventional fashion style with the assistance of his stylist, Taylor McNeill. Notably, Chalamet has embraced a growing collection of True Religion denim, a brand that defined the Y2K fashion era of his youth. Whether making appearances on the red carpet or dining with girlfriend Kylie Jenner, the 29-year-old Oscar-nominated actor has made vintage-inspired denim a signature of his public outings.
Chalamet’s affinity for True Religion extends beyond mere brand endorsement; he has actively sought out vintage pieces from the brand’s archives. His deep dive into the world of early-2000s True Religion began through his personal exploration of resale platforms. Understanding Chalamet’s enthusiasm for the brand, McNeill reached out to True Religion to explore options for more unique pieces.
“Taylor sent pictures of things [Timothée] got online, mainly from Grailed. He wanted to know if we had similar pieces coming out, or other versions,” explained Tina Blake, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand Image at True Religion. Blake revealed that True Religion was indeed in the process of reworking its signature topstitched jeans with new fabrics and silhouettes. “Taylor walked us through all his upcoming award shows and appearances, and we pulled pieces from future collections, our archives, and things we currently had,” she added.
Among the outfits Chalamet debuted, a striking red velvet ensemble at the film’s premiere in Rome stood out, which he selected personally. “He liked it so much that he asked if there were other colors,” Blake noted, leading to the development of a brown version set for release during the holiday season.
Since undertaking this promotional tour, Chalamet has donned True Religion garments on six separate occasions—including red carpet events, a Paris dinner, and a Saturday Night Live appearance. Kristen D’Arcy, True Religion’s Chief Marketing Officer, described the impact of Chalamet’s fashion choices as significant, especially in light of the brand’s ongoing initiatives to connect with younger demographics. Around the time of Chalamet’s appearances, True Religion also launched the “Own Your True” campaign, celebrating its 23-year history, alongside a partnership with Brazilian singer Anitta, who boasts over 64 million followers on Instagram. D’Arcy reported a nearly 30% increase in website traffic and an uptick in foot traffic across all 50-plus retail locations due to the buzz surrounding Chalamet.
The resurgence of Y2K fashion has undeniably played a role in revitalizing True Religion’s appeal, with Chalamet’s influence adding further momentum to this cultural moment. “He’s so fashion-forward, and when someone like him picks pieces from our collections, that’s a validation that we’re hitting the right marks and resonating with younger consumers,” said Blake.
As speculation mounts regarding the potential for an official collaboration between True Religion and Chalamet, D’Arcy hinted at exciting prospects. “As always, we have some surprises in the queue—you’ll have to wait and see,” she remarked.
Whether Chalamet’s recent fashion statements signify a one-time event or herald the beginning of a more substantial partnership, one thing is clear: Timothée Chalamet has successfully brought True Religion back into the fashion limelight.
