The United Nations Environment Programme is set to organize a global webinar to promote sustainable practices in the fashion and textiles industry, coinciding with the International Day of Zero Waste.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is preparing to host a significant global webinar in conjunction with the third annual International Day of Zero Waste, scheduled for March 30, 2025. This pivotal event, which is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable practices, will focus on the theme “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles.”

Participants from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean will engage in discussions on sustainable production and consumption patterns, crucial for paving the way to a zero-waste future. The event is set to take place from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Nairobi time (GMT +3) for the Africa, Europe, and Asia regions and from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM Jamaica time (GMT -5) for participants in Latin America and the Caribbean. Registration is required for attendance, and individuals interested in participating must complete the registration process ahead of the event.

The importance of the textiles industry in the context of waste generation and environmental pollution cannot be overstated. With this year’s theme addressing the need for sustainable practices in fashion, UNEP has emphasized the principles of prevention, reduction, reuse, repurposing, and recycling. These principles align with the Global Goals set forth in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12, which targets Responsible Consumption and Production.

In an effort to engage young leaders from various backgrounds, the webinar aims to foster cross-regional collaboration and stimulate the exchange of innovative ideas. Raphael Obonyo, a journalist, and Diljot Kaur Dhindsa, the Sustainable Finance Thematic Co-Facilitator at the Children and Youth Major Group (CYMG), are slated to speak at the event, highlighting the role of youth in pushing forward the zero-waste movement and enhancing sustainability within the fashion sector.

Through this initiative, UNEP aspires to attract young changemakers from around the world, providing them with a platform to share insights and drive impactful changes in their communities, thereby playing a crucial role in the global commitment to reducing waste pollution.
