Uniq, Checkers’ innovative fashion store, blends affordability with quality, appealing to a diverse range of shoppers while promoting local manufacturing and sustainability.
Uniq, positioned as Checkers’ innovative approach to fashion retail, is generating buzz for its unique offering of contemporary clothing that straddles the line between affordability and quality. Located in various regions, the store aims to attract shoppers who may have previously overlooked fashion retail linked to grocery brands.
Having opened after more than 18 months of anticipation, Uniq has quickly established itself as a destination for uncomplicated fashion. With its focus on relatable price points that avoid extremes, the store fosters a minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of classic retailers like Stuttafords. Shoppers can expect a tactile experience as the fabrics are a significant draw, triggering sensations akin to autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) as noted by a customer who described the touch of the fabrics as “soothing and satisfying.”
Leighe Ogle, the operations head of Uniq, emphasizes that the fashion is largely manufactured within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), promoting local sourcing in line with an increasing emphasis on sustainability. He stated, “We’re particularly excited about Tencel and Modal blends,” highlighting the brand’s commitment to environmentally friendly and comfortable materials.
As the winter season approaches, Uniq is rolling out an array of new styles, featuring items such as barrel-leg trousers that mark a departure from the previously dominant skinny styles. Ogle pointed out that the latest knitwear is adopting a more structured look compared to previous offerings, aligning with current fashion trends. Additionally, he mentioned, “Jackets are being reimagined in fresh shapes and interesting fabrics,” indicating an evolution in outerwear that balances warmth with style.
The color palette for this season is vibrant and bold, with color combinations like moss green, rust, and cobalt blue underpinning the offerings. Ogle stated, “Freshness comes from pairing moss green, rust, and cobalt blue,” suggesting that these combinations are carefully curated to appeal to customers seeking both style and versatility.
For menswear, Uniq is introducing a variety of knitwear crafted from 100% cotton yarn, as well as blends that incorporate cashmere. “Additionally, heavyweight fleece is returning in varied silhouettes, complemented by an extensive jacket range for warmth and style,” Ogle added, catering to a diverse range of customer preferences.
Children’s fashion is also being refreshed with vibrant prints and practical materials designed to appeal to both kids and parents. Ogle highlighted features such as raincoats and modal-infused fleece, serving the dual purpose of functionality and comfort for active children.
Uniq also adopts a modern approach to retail operations by eliminating traditional cashiers in favor of self-service checkouts that allow customers to scan and pay for their items using advanced technology. This innovative system is aimed at enhancing customer service, resulting in store attendants having more time to assist shoppers without intruding on their experience.
With a strong emphasis on quality, sustainability, and innovative shopping experiences, Uniq promises to carve out a distinctive niche in the fashion retail landscape, making it a noteworthy option for consumers this season.
