Alessandro Michele’s new Bowow heels blend classic design with contemporary comfort, set to launch in 2025.

In the fashion world, certain styles endure the test of time, while others may fade into obscurity. A new line of footwear from Valentino Garavani, designed by Alessandro Michele, is stirring nostalgia for the fashion sensibilities of the 1960s and 70s as it prepares for its launch in 2025.

For over a decade, high heels have seen little evolution, with closed styles featuring pointed triangular toes and towering heels typically ranging from 8 to 12 centimeters dominating the market. These traditional designs have largely remained unchanged, seemingly trapped in a specific aesthetic. However, Michele, known for his penchant for challenging norms, is set to disrupt this trend with his latest offering, the Bowow heels.

The Bowow heels were initially unveiled in Michele’s first collection for Valentino Garavani during the Cruise 2025 season. The modern interpretation features a tapered design but incorporates softer edges for a more inviting appearance. Significantly, the heel height is markedly reduced to a comfortable 4.5 centimeters, emphasizing practicality for everyday use.

Named presumably to evoke a sense of delight and playfulness, the Bowow represents a fusion of classic design elements with contemporary comfort. The shoe features a rounded toe and is adorned with a charming bow detail, which has led to some comparisons to “communion shoes.” This resemblance is largely attributed to its gentle shape and the classic white color showcased in the lookbook. That said, the Bowow is available in an array of colors and even prints to appeal to a wider audience.

The design ethos behind the Bowow heels calls back to a time when women dressed impeccably for all occasions, favoring heels over casual footwear like sneakers. The nostalgia is palpable for those who remember the elegance of that era. Michele’s design encapsulates this sentiment by offering options in both leather and fabric, reminiscent of footwear materials used in the past. A small V logo is also incorporated into the heel, adding a touch of luxury.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, Michele’s innovative approach with the Bowow heels could signal a significant shift in how footwear is perceived and worn, bridging the gap between historical styles and contemporary needs.
