Woolworths teams up with designer Anya Hindmarch to launch The Universal Bag, a sustainable tote aimed at reducing plastic use in Australia.
Woolworths has entered the designer fashion space with the launch of The Universal Bag, a sustainable tote designed by renowned British luxury accessories designer Anya Hindmarch. Set to hit the shelves of 600 Woolworths locations across Australia in mid-March, the bag will retail for an accessible price of $20, making it one of the most affordable designer items available from Hindmarch.
This initiative is part of Woolworths’ ongoing efforts to encourage customers to abandon single-use plastic bags in favor of more sustainable options. The Universal Bag is not only stylish but also boasts several eco-friendly features. It is crafted from 100% recycled plastic and has received certification under the Global Recycling Scheme (GRS), confirming it meets rigorous sustainability standards.
Hindmarch’s design emphasizes both fashion and functionality, distinguishing it from traditional supermarket tote bags. The Universal Bag is designed to be durable, with a lifespan of up to a decade, having passed extensive durability tests. Its reinforced handles ensure comfort when laden with groceries, while a sturdy base allows for easy packing and unpacking.
Moreover, the bag is water-resistant, easy to clean, and folds neatly for convenience, making it practical for everyday use. It aims to change the perception of reusable bags, encouraging customers to cherish and frequently use the tote rather than allowing it to gather dust or be discarded.
Hindmarch is not new to the conversation around sustainable fashion. Her I Am Not A Plastic Bag campaign in 2007 played a significant role in shifting public attitudes toward plastic use, and The Universal Bag represents a new collaborative effort with major global retailers to combat plastic pollution.
“The Universal Bag project has saved over 230 tonnes of virgin plastic from landfill to date, the equivalent weight of over 19 London double-decker buses,” Hindmarch stated, highlighting the impact of the initiative.
Woolworths has become the first Australian supermarket to join this collaborative movement, following the paths of established retailers such as Selfridges, Whole Foods, and Waitrose in the UK, along with prominent stores in Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. This launch not only introduces a fashionable and functional product but also reinforces Woolworths’ commitment to sustainability in retail.
