Xeric Watches introduces the Timeline Retrograde Automatic, a unique timepiece featuring a double-retrograde complication reminiscent of 1960s design, now accessible to collectors.
Xeric Watches is reviving a largely overlooked piece of horological heritage with the introduction of the Timeline Retrograde Automatic. This new timepiece features a unique double-retrograde complication, a style that experienced its heyday in the late 1960s but has since become a rarity, primarily favored by high-end watchmakers.
Mitch Greenblatt, the founder of Xeric Watches and author of “Retro Watches: The Modern Collector’s Guide,” has long had a fascination with the distinctive designs of the 1960s and 1970s. He is particularly drawn to the double retrograde complication, which traces its origins back to 17th-century pocket watches. Unlike traditional watches that utilize a continuously sweeping hand to indicate time, retrograde complications employ a hand that moves along an arc before resetting back to the beginning to start the process anew. The Timeline Retrograde Automatic uniquely displays both hours and minutes through this innovative mechanism.
Developing a watch equipped with such a complication presents challenges, particularly for a brand focused on accessibility like Xeric. Traditionally, double-retrograde movements have been the domain of luxury brands such as Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre. However, Xeric has achieved the integration of this complex functionality at a more accessible price point. The Timeline Retrograde Automatic is powered by a Miyota 9015 automatic movement, which has been modified to accommodate the custom-built retrograde complication. As the minute hand completes its 60-minute course, a flyback mechanism instantly resets it to the start, followed by the hour hand resetting at each 12-hour mark.
The visual presentation of the Timeline Retrograde is crucial to its appeal. The watch features applied luminous indices, diverse surface textures, and a prominently magnified date window. The overall design reflects a deep appreciation of retro aesthetics. The semi-square case, measuring 38mm in diameter and constructed from stainless steel, combines both comfort and style with its integrated three-link bracelet. The watch’s dimensions and finish—a mix of brushed and polished surfaces—enhance its period-correct elegance.
For collectors and enthusiasts, the Timeline Retrograde will be available in several color variants, including a classic silver dial in a stainless-steel case and a distinctive gold and black dial option. Each of the colorways offers its own charm, with choices ranging from vibrant coral to a colorful prism. Importantly, each variant is limited to just 999 pieces and will be offered at a preorder price of $699 to $749 USD, with a retail price set at $999 USD. Those interested can place preorders through Xeric’s Kickstarter campaign or explore more about the brand on their website.
