In Margate, 27-year-old Anna Cash Davidson has successfully transformed her lifelong passion for fashion into a lucrative side business, reporting a remarkable 130% increase in profits over the past three months.
Davidson, who works as a freelancer in the music industry, has always had an affinity for vintage and second-hand clothing, often finding that deals for items she loved were not always in her size or style. This led her to explore the reselling market, where she quickly began to monetize her passion. “I’ve always loved buying vintage and second-hand clothes,” she shared.
Her foray into reselling began with small-scale purchases, including a vintage PVC jacket that she acquired for £15 and sold for £30. Reflecting on her early experiences, she remarked, “Looking back, it could definitely have been worth more, but I was just super excited that I had made a profit.”
Currently, Davidson sells her curated clothing through various popular online platforms, including Depop and Etsy, as well as via a website she developed alongside her brother to feature hand-painted vintage apparel. Her most profitable month so far saw her earning £950, with her highest markup recorded at £225 on an upcycled jacket bought for just £10 from a charity shop.
While Davidson frequents charity shops, car boot sales, and Facebook Marketplace to source inventory, she has also tapped into a bulk purchasing strategy through a vintage wholesaler named Fleek. She believes this approach remains underutilized, as many individuals shy away from buying larger quantities of clothing. However, she highlights the cost-effectiveness and buyer protection that come with bulk buying.
Her dedicated strategy behind selling involves regular and consistent updates to her inventory, particularly on Depop, where she lists new items daily. “I only ever buy items that I personally love but I also pay attention to trends,” she noted. Davidson uses social media platforms, especially TikTok and Depop’s interface, to gauge trends and evaluate which items are likely to sell well. She has identified current fashion focuses such as graphic and funky mesh long-sleeve tops, which she describes as versatile for various weather conditions and occasions, as well as high-quality vintage leather and suede jackets.
While Davidson has seen significant financial gains in her venture, she acknowledges that the journey hasn’t been instantaneous. Beginning her reselling business in September 2023, she has set her sights on making it her full-time job by 2025. Presently, she dedicates time each week to photograph and list new items, managing her stock efficiently alongside her other commitments, which often leads her to the post office during her lunch breaks.
Her selling philosophy emphasizes the need to combine popular brands with current styles. “The brand alone normally won’t sell the item if it doesn’t feel current,” Davidson explained. Furthermore, she also encourages new resellers to remain open to smaller profits, as these can accumulate over time. Ensuring high-quality images and using relevant hashtags in marketing efforts stand as essential elements of her success strategy.
As her venture continues to grow, Davidson’s approach showcases both the creative and strategic aspects of reselling in the contemporary fashion market.
