The Brookline Department of Public Works will partner with the Senior Center for a clothing and textile drive aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
The Brookline Department of Public Works (DPW) is set to host its annual clothing and textile drive in collaboration with the Brookline Senior Center on Tuesday, April 8. The event is scheduled to run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the senior center located at 93 Winchester St.
This year’s drive will incorporate the services of Helpsy, a company dedicated to diverting textiles from landfills. According to data cited by the DPW, approximately 230,000 tons of textiles enter the state’s waste stream each year, which poses environmental challenges, including potential water pollution and a rise in greenhouse gas emissions.
Participants are encouraged to make appointments online prior to the event to streamline the donation process. The drive will accept all clothing and textile items, irrespective of their condition, allowing community members the opportunity to donate various items that would otherwise contribute to waste.
Helpsy will assess the textiles donated during the drive, determining which items can be resold to stores for reuse and which will be recycled into products like rags or insulation. This process aligns with broader sustainability goals aimed at reducing the environmental impact associated with textile disposal.
