In a recent interview, actress Elle Fanning shared insights on her collaboration with Coach and her personal style, emphasizing the importance of individuality and deeper narratives in fashion.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar Australia, actress Elle Fanning shared her thoughts on fashion, personal style, and her collaboration with Coach for their new spring campaign titled “On Your Own Time.” Fanning, known for her role in “A Complete Unknown,” expressed a strong preference for larger bags, stating, “Oh, I like a big bag. I want to be wrestling in my bag and throwing all sorts of things in.” She elaborated on her typical bag contents, including makeup, her passport, multiple chargers, and wired headphones, highlighting her practical approach to accessorizing.
As the Global Ambassador for Coach since 2024, Fanning found her connection with the brand to be a natural fit, attributing this to its whimsical nature and relaxed ethos. “There’s just a sense of whimsy in the brand, and they don’t take themselves too seriously,” she remarked. Fanning recalled her initial meeting with Coach’s creative director, Stuart Vevers, who invited her to lunch to discuss the ambassadorship. She emphasized the intimacy and loyalty within the Coach team, showcasing a tight-knit atmosphere conducive to creative collaboration.
The campaign features imagery captured by Elaine Constantine, who also photographed Fanning for her first campaign titled “Unlock Your Courage.” Reflecting on their collaboration, Fanning stated, “She is just clicking away at the camera and you are just moving constantly,” praising Constantine’s energetic and vibrant presence. Fanning expressed admiration for Constantine’s work even before their collaboration, revealing that she had collected over 100,000 photos on her phone, many of which were inspired by Constantine’s photography.
The campaign also includes a short film directed by Henry Scholfield, in which Fanning experiences the challenges of a hectic life. The narrative illustrates her journey toward regaining control by setting aside her phone and embracing the idea of living at one’s own pace. Fanning relates to this theme, explaining, “I love a bath. I take a bath every night and… I don’t know how long I’m gonna sit in there.”
In her approach to acting, Fanning embraces a methodical process, stating that finding a character “is something that can only be done in your own time.” She acknowledges the organic nature of character development, emphasizing that it can take time to fully resonate with a role.
Highlighting the underlying messages of the Coach campaigns, Fanning remarked on the importance of depth beyond aesthetics. “I think what’s cool about these campaigns is that they’re not just necessarily about looking pretty and selling the bag. There is a message behind it,” she noted, indicating her commitment to creating a narrative through her fashion endeavors.
With a penchant for theatricality in her fashion choices, Fanning concluded with a reflection on the beauty of individuality: “I think the quirkiness and anything that’s a little off about it is what makes it beautiful.” Her partnership with Coach allows her to express these sentiments while modeling its latest collections.
