Designer Keisuke Nagami’s latest collection for Hatra merges fashion and technology, showcasing a range of striking futuristic designs that captivate the fashion community, despite mixed reviews on their runway presentation.
Hatra, the innovative fashion brand created by designer Keisuke Nagami, showcased its latest collection during a highly anticipated runway event that drew considerable attention from the fashion community. Known for blending the realms of fashion and technology, Nagami has established a unique aesthetic that he refers to as “liminal wear.” Founded 15 years ago, Hatra has gained a loyal following and now stands at the forefront of futuristic fashion.
The event featured an array of striking pieces with an emphasis on prints, which emerged as the standout element of the collection. The garments were characterized by chrome-like patterns and effects that resembled light refractions, displayed on relaxed smocks, knitted garments, and elegant shift dresses. These futuristic designs stem from the designer’s complex interactions with artificial intelligence, which he describes as an “alien intelligence.” “It’s not like a simple ChatGPT thing where you request an answer and get a response,” Nagami explained backstage. “It’s more like a journey, with fragments that spill out as you communicate.”
One of Nagami’s signature features, the jacquard knits crafted from six colors of thread, presented vibrant imagery akin to supernovas, celebrating the integration of technology with artistry. Nagami expressed his vision for the collection, stating, “I want people to feel the world flowing in [through the clothes].”
In addition to innovative prints, the collection showcased a range of tailored pieces that incorporated unique elements. Trousers featured asymmetrical designs and additional panels, while jackets were characterized by large lapels shaped through intricate seaming techniques, evoking an origami aesthetic. Notably, black pleated trousers exhibited a graceful swish, created using advanced 3D simulation software, CLO, to exhibit how the fabric interacts with movement. Nagami described this aspect as an exploration of how “various images which are born and disappear continuously with the wearer’s movements.”
Adding to the otherworldly atmosphere were the unusual spherical bags designed in collaboration with sci-fi artist runurunu, adorned with mollusk-like suckers. Models further accessorized the looks with crystals and spiky artifacts resembling alien objects, enhancing the collection’s cosmic theme.
Despite the visually captivating elements, critiques arose regarding the overall impact of the collection. Observers noted that, while rich in details, the pieces sometimes felt less impressive in the runway setting, suggesting an opportunity for more theatricality to complement Nagami’s avant-garde concepts.
