Seres Footwear, founded by Vanessa Arroyo, is making waves in Chicago’s fashion scene by prioritizing sustainability and ethical production methods.

In the vibrant city of Chicago, where fashion intersects with ethics, Seres Footwear has emerged as a notable player in the sustainable footwear market. Founded by Vanessa Arroyo, 35, nearly two years ago, the brand is a blend of Arroyo’s Chicana heritage and her experience in high-end fashion, specifically with the luxury brand Rag & Bone. The company is dedicated to producing ethically made footwear designed to stand the test of time.

The name “Seres,” which translates to “beings” in Spanish, encapsulates Arroyo’s commitment not just to the craftsmanship of her products but also to the people and the environment. As a member of Chicago Fair Trade, she champions fair wages and healthy labor conditions within the manufacturing process. Seres shoes utilize a vegetable-based tanning method, sidestepping the hazardous chromium traditionally found in leather tanning, allowing for a more environmentally friendly production.

The logistics behind the brand are also noteworthy; Seres shoes are shipped through an auto parts delivery route, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint during transportation. Arroyo’s approach to sustainability extends beyond the shoes themselves, showcasing a holistic view of environmental impact.

Raised in Chicago by Mexican immigrants, Arroyo’s journey into fashion began in earnest when she moved to New York City at the age of 21, immersing herself in the luxury fashion landscape. Despite this opportunity, she sought deeper fulfillment and redirected her focus to the art of shoemaking in León, Guanajuato, a city famed for its footwear craftsmanship. The materials for Seres are sourced from there, reinforcing Arroyo’s devotion to both her heritage and the quality of her product while she manages operations from Chicago.

Seres Footwear is committed to durability, with Arroyo urging customers to maintain their shoes by visiting cobblers for repairs like soling and conditioning which ensure longevity. The designs are crafted to be timeless and versatile, appealing to a wide audience, including local residents who frequent events like the Do Division Street Fest in Wicker Park.

Currently, Seres offers four distinct models, comprised of two boots priced at $200 each and two sandals retailing at $220, distinguished by their chunky leather heels. Featured models include the Luz sandal, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional huarache style, and the Ester zip-up bootie, which is well-received for its sleek, utilitarian look. The footwear is available for purchase online through seresfootwear.com as well as at various local pop-up events, with details shared on their Instagram account @seresfootwear.
